Learning Socialism

I think socialism appeals to me because I am fond of the thought that a society is only as strong as it's weakest link. In this context I'm thinking of weakest link as someone who is lower on the totem pole in a society that elevates you (figuratively and literally) based on what you own. There will always be the have and the have nots. Is it naive to want a society where neither is thing?
What I'm currently working out is how can we help people? I do my best donating to my local food kitchen and I am active in local elections but I feel as if more needs to be done. If I'm able to become a millionaire and get every single homeless person off the street today by the next day there will be a new batch of people to replace them. At some point the system has to change and at some point the people have to do something. I'm not entirely sure how this change happens but the seeds need to be planted.
While I feel confident calling myself a socialist I'm still learning what it means to be one. I don't want to just be on the interent telling people I'm socialist, I want to be a productive member of society and help push humanity forward. There's much to learn and even more to do.
Peace.
